What is Choremancing in Dating?

Another day, another dating term that seems to make no sense until you learn what it means, and go, “Ahhh, okay, I get it now.” Today’s new term is known as ‘choremancing,’ and despite what I first thought, no, it doesn’t include going shopping and making use of the humble five-fingered discount.

(In my defence, a slang term for stealing ‘down south’ is choring. I chored that bread = I stole that bread.)

Anyway, let’s get back to choremancing. Not the one that involves stealing.

What is Choremancing in Dating?

Just like affordating, choremancing is a combination of two words: chores, and romancing. Chore-romancing, if you like.

You are, essentially, blending the romantic and/or dating areas of your life with housework and other similar areas. I suppose we could call it, killing two birds with one stone. Proverbially, of course. No birds were killed in the making of this guide.

Would you like some examples of chore-dates?

  • Food shopping with your date/partner
  • Doing laundry together
  • Car wash party date
  • Dog walking
  • Grabbing coffee and picking up dry cleaning
  • Going to the gym/working out together
  • Cleaning the house
  • Meal prepping or cooking
  • Building flatpack furniture
  • Even moving house!

Pick a chore, add a potential special person, and you’re winning at choremancing, basically.

Choremancing Guide

The Romance of Choremance

As previously discussed, you can take part in choremancing by combining any aspect of your chores with a date or partner. A willing date or partner, obviously. You can’t just force someone from Hinge to do your housework for you. (And if you can, please teach me how to do exactly that.) This includes things like the car wash, moving home, or anything from the list above.

Those aren’t the only ways to do it, though.

You can ‘choremance’ your partner by doing their chores for them. For example, if you see that their car is out of petrol, diesel, whatever, why not take it to the garage and fill it up? You’re saving them a job, earning partnership brownie points, and going out of way to make your special someone’s day a bit easier. What’s not to love about that?

With the acts of service love language sorted, you can also consider doing different things at the same time, getting two lots of stuff done at once and being super-efficient about it. One could do laundry while the other does the dishes, for example.

Choremancing: The Pros

The 2020s have been super tough on people, and none of us really have the heart for old school dating anymore. Thankfully, as is the case with most things in life, dating trends have changed – and 2026 is the year of choremancing. But why?

Time

Now, I don’t know about you, but I don’t have very many spare hours in my week. By the time I have worked, checked in with my family, walked my friend through yet another breakup, cooked food, eaten food, cleaned up after myself, washed my clothes, travelled to and from various places, worked out, and remembered to stock up on milk, there’s barely any time left.

Choremancing is great for people who don’t have a lot of time on their hands. If the only time you have available is that one hour you’d planned to spend food shopping, why not fit in a little date at the same time? That’s multitasking like a champ if you ask me.

Money

Money is also tight these days. If you’re eating at restaurants a minimum of one date per week, that soon adds up to potentially hundreds of pounds in a month, depending on which of you pays. And what happens if the date is a dud? Sure, you’ve eaten; but it’s wasted money on a person that you’re probably never going to see again. Choremancing eliminates the wastefulness of dating, in terms of money, time, effort, and more.

Not just that, aren’t we all a little bored of doing the same thing on dates over and over again? How many restaurants can we eat at? How many movies can we watch? How many of the same dates can we have multiple times? Why not try a little something different, such as choremancing in dating and/or romance? Flirting through functionality; we love it!

Domestic Preview

None of us have time to waste, so it makes a lot of sense that we’d want to go down to business as soon as possible – and choremancing gives you a glimpse into the future… and what you can expect from your partner in a hypothetical relationship.

Let me set the scene: you’re doing laundry with a date, but they’re making the washing machine look like hard work, and it’s giving you the ick. The more time you spend together in a domestic setting, the more you realise that you just don’t like him enough to do all of the housework forever more. So, you ditch them. There’s no wasted time, and there’s no point in wasting time.

In, out, shake it all about, and all that.

Compatibility Check

What irritates you during the honeymoon or dating stage of a relationship, will drive you fuckin’ bonkers along the line. What if they don’t clean the bathroom mirrors properly, or don’t know how to food shop for themselves, or can’t change a bedsheet to save their lives? You need to know these things to determine whether or not you’re compatible. We all know how easy it is to get the ick these days. (Or is that just me?)

Not just that, though, you can tell how your date handles certain things, such as stress, things going wrong, the store not having what they want, multitasking, etc.

Trust me on this: try choremancing, then get back to me about compatibility levels. I bet you get the answer one way or the other, that’s all I’m saying.

Guide to Choremancing

Choremancing: The Cons

Now, as with pretty much everything in the dating realm, there are some disadvantages to the choremancing fad. Let’s take a closer look at them and see if you’re up for this particular challenge.

Ick?

Some potential dates are going to run a mile as soon as you mention anything about housework or chores on a first date – and that’s perfectly okay. They don’t have to love choremancing. Nor do you, for that matter. For some people it can be seen as a bit fast-paced for light-hearted dating.

Vibe Killer

Going to Asda together is hardly the most romantic thing in the world, and it’s not for everyone. There’s nothing glamourous about it, and you don’t need to get dressed up to do it. It’s a really low-effort vibe, and some folks are high effort folks, you know?

Sparkability

There’s no way of having a quick kiss, then getting carried away when you’re dating in a supermarket or laundrette. The whole thing could be seen as missing a special kind of spark, which some people think is vital in those early stages.

Motherability

Listen, fellas, don’t start messaging the ladies on Tinder and asking them to wash your dirty undies for you. There’s a way of doing these things, and it ain’t that. The idea is that you do these things together, or at least nice little things for each other. You can’t choremance your way into replacing the mother figure in your life.

Choremancing: Conclusion

So, choremancing is the act of combining your dating life with housework and other chores. It’s an out-there idea, for sure… but definitely not a terrible one. I’m not entirely against the idea, you know?

What do you think, though? Would you choremance? Are you already choremancing? Do you think the idea is utterly ludicrous? Let me know in the comments below!
