The moment it was all over between Sailor Boy and I, was when he was lying in my bed, during a weekend off, properly hungover, and groaning like he was dying. It was a complete bolt out of the blue. Suddenly, I just wasn’t attracted to him. It was time for a breakup… again.
A Breakup
He hadn’t exactly done anything wrong, as such; he just wasn’t doing anything right, either. The sex in a boat had been fine, enjoyable, you know… but The Fireman wouldn’t have let things go that way. Goth Boy probably wouldn’t have done, either. I felt somewhat shortchanged by the non-mention of my orgasm, and the appeal of Sailor Boy had worn off. I appreciated him in uniform, but out of it… he just wasn’t for me. (Isn’t it funny how that happens?)
Him moaning about his hangover wasn’t the thing that made me break up with him; it was the straw that broke the camel’s back. He wasn’t the only one that felt like shit… but I’d gotten up, made hot drinks, and then made a fried breakfast for us both. I felt like a parent, which I disliked immensely. I also felt like an underappreciated housewife, and he hadn’t even put a ring on my finger yet.
Heck, technically, it was only our third date.
A Make Up
I could probably come up with one hundred reasons why SB had pissed me off during that one weekend together, but in reality, one very big thing had started the ball rolling, not long after I’d come back from SB’s parade… and that thing, was a person.
The Fireman.
He’d blown my phone up as soon as he heard that I was back home, and I think he just assumed that I’d go running back into his arms. He assumed correctly, of course, because I did – and before I’d even made the decision to break up with Sailor Boy.
Nothing happened, really… just a kiss and a handful of arm/leg touches. But the chemistry was there, just like it always was. And it was killing me. I didn’t want to cheat again, and I certainly didn’t want to give The Fireman any reason to constantly punish me again. So, I told him to wait. I had to “sort things out” first. I mean, it’s not like I could tell him that I wanted to break up with my current boyfriend, to get back together with him, my ex-boyfriend?!
The Fireman agreed to wait. “Whatever you need time for, I can give it to you.”
“I just need to decompress a bit, you know? Basic training was hard,” I said, and it wasn’t a lie. Not entirely, anyway.
So, we waited. And when Sailor Boy came to my house on that weekend, I deliberately got us as drunk as possible, hoping that one or both of us would pass out before he had the chance to bring up sex. Thankfully, that is exactly what happened. Technically, I didn’t cheat on anyone, and I didn’t have to break up with anyone over the phone. (Go me?)
As he packed his bags to leave early on Sunday morning, he asked me if I was happy. I probably hadn’t done a good job of pretending to be in a relationship with him.
“You know,” I started. “I don’t think I am. I just think I need some time to decompress and sort my head out.”
If it worked on The Fireman, I hope it would work on Sailor Boy, too.
“I’m going back home in an hour,” he said. “It’s not like we’re spending any time together. Can’t you sort your head out while we’re apart?”
He did have a good point, but it wasn’t good enough. A few minutes later, the deed was done. I had gone through another breakup, and it was nowhere near as bad as my last few. I suppose it helps when you don’t actually like the person.
Not long after he left (and I’m talking five or six hours,) I gave The Fireman a call. “Hey, you. Are you busy tonight?”
I had a breakup and a make up in one day, and not even with the same person – that’s definitely a new one for me.
